Self‐Care on Hemodialysis: Behaviors With the Arteriovenous Fistula

Abstract: End stage renal disease (ESRD) patients should be educated to maintain and preserve the arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in the best condition. The purpose of this work was to evaluate self-care frequency and factors that influenced such frequency. A prospective study was performed in 101 hemodialysis patients. Self-care behaviors were measured with the Scale of Assessment of Self-Care Behaviours with Arteriovenous Fistula in Hemodialysis. A regression model was used to determine the relevant predictors of self-car… Show more

“…Despite the importance of maintaining self-care actions in patients with chronic disease, studies show that renal patients develop these actions poorly [ 9 , 30 , 31 ]. Yang and co-workers [ 30 ] found that 69.9% of hemodialysis patients had a low or moderate self-care behavior with low-grade AVF, suggesting that although patients remain attentive to AVF, self-care behavior with access still needs to be improved.…”

“…Despite the importance of all self-care actions for the prevention and monitoring of AVF complications, a study that applied a scale of self-care behaviors with fistula showed that only 63.9% of patients developed these behaviors [ 31 ].…”

“…It is essential for patients with chronic diseases such as end‐stage renal disease. Our study found that 69.9% of hemodialysis patients’ AVF self‐care behaviors were at a low or moderate level, which was similar to the findings of other studies . Suggesting that although hemodialysis patients have a certain degree of attention to AVF, their AVF self‐care behavior still needs to be improved.…”

“…Development of selfcare behaviors with the AVF allows maintaining the access in good condition, prevents complications related to vascular access, and can contribute to AVF patency (Kukita et al, 2015;NKF-K/DOQI, 2006;Tordoir et al, 2007). Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) should be educated and trained to take care of their own AVF, with the purpose of developing self-care behaviors with their vascular access (Sousa et al, 2014;Sousa et al, 2017). Furthermore, AVFcaring patients are more likely to identify complications with the vascular access.…”
