Construction and validation a nomogram to predict overall survival for colorectal signet ring cell carcinoma

Abstract: To construct and validate a nomogram to predict the overall survival (OS) of colorectal signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC). The potentially eligible cases were obtained against the SEER database from 2004 to 2015. Log-rank test and Cox analysis were conducted to identify the independent prognostic factors for predicting OS. The identified prognostic factors were later integrated for the construction of an OS prediction nomogram. Altogether 2904 eligible cases were identified, and the median survival time was 18… Show more

“…Compared to other types of CRC, SRCC tends to have a poorer prognosis, with early onset, right-sidedness, and peritoneal metastasis [ 37 ]. Although the nature of SRCC is significantly aggressive and the prognosis or treatment of SRCC is difficult to predict, other studies have reported that surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy still have a significant role in improving the survival of patients with SRCC [ 4 , 38 ]. Therefore, we need to consider active surgery and chemotherapy for CRC patients with SRCC, even those who are underweight.…”

“…[31] Chemotherapy has been also recognized to be the factor to independently predict overall survival for colorectal SRCC. [28] Our study has several advantages. The SEER database covers data from 18 medical centers, representing the diverse populations.…”

“…Based on these results, we constructed a nomogram to predict LTSs, which is an easy-to-use and visual tool for clinical use. As shown in Figure 2 , primary tumor treatment exerted the largest impact on the possibility of being LTSs, indicating the significant role of surgery in localized or locally advanced colorectal SRCC [ 23 ], especially in the era of multidisciplinary treatment of colorectal SRCC [ 24 ]. Other parameters (including race, marital status, T stage, and N stage) had relatively smaller effects.…”
