Constructing content validity of clinical nurse specialist core competencies: exploratory sequential mixed‐method study

Abstract: Through a rigorous research process, validated clinical nurse specialist competency criteria were formed with a high Scale Content Validity Index Average. The results allude to the potential of formulating international competency criteria to support global role clarity and understanding. However, further research is needed to validate the content and construct of the formulated competencies with a larger population across countries.

“…Furthermore, competency standards have been used as benchmarks for entry to practice and thus form a base for safe nursing practices and role standardisation (Sastre-Fullana et al, 2014). However, in many countries outside of North America, CNS competency development is in its early stages, and a lack of legislative and regulatory mechanisms or protected titles for CNS roles is evident (Jokiniemi et al, 2018;Maier et al, 2017). Among the examined countries, in Finland and Denmark there is no title protection for the CNS, although general guidelines do exist (Jokiniemi et al, 2019;Sundhedsstyrelsen, 2009).…”

“…Although CNS roles were first developed more than 60 years ago in the United States, CNS competency development dates back to the late 20th century and has predominantly occurred in the United States and Canada (Baldwin et al, 2007;CNA, 2014;Jokiniemi et al, 2018). In the United States, the first core competencies of CNS practice were developed in 1998 (Fulton, 2014).…”

“…APN policy. Therefore, soliciting for collaboration and finding common ground for mutual visions between policymakers, practitioners, managers, educators, and politicians in the nursing and APN role development are of upmost importance(Bryant-Lukosius & DiCenso, 2004).There is an international need to specify requirements for generalist, specialist, and advanced practice, to alleviate confusion about the various roles and clarify role expectations (see, eg, Boman, Egilsdottir, Levy-Malmberg,& Fagerström, 2018;Dury et al, 2014;Jokiniemi, Meretoja, & Pietilä, 2018). While policy incentives can encourage the uptake of new nursing roles, the final decisions to recruit and employ RNs in advanced roles are made by the organizations(Maier et al, 2017).…”

“…Instrumento de Avaliação da Atenção Nutricional content validation was performed, using the Delphi technique, a method based on the approach to consensus through an experts' panel judgment on a problem [26]. This technique is widely used in health studies, such as, for example, building consensus on curriculum, training, professional skills, clinical practice and interventions and also for validating models of action and development of indicators [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34].…”
