Construct Validity of the Maslach Burnout Inventory: A Critical Review and Reconceptualization

Abstract: This article presents an evaluation of the construct validity of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The authors base this critique on previously published findings and data collected through five studies carried out during an eight-year period, for which 328 social workers acted as respondents. Factor analyses and correlational studies designed to test predictions provided fairly consistent evidence for the utility of the MBI subscale measures of emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonali… Show more

“…The increase in contingent rewards and operating conditions, as well as the decrease in role conflict and emotional exhaustion in this study verify their respective roles as antecedents to stress and burnout (Maslach, 1982;Jackson et al, 1986;Koeske & Koeske, 1989;Lee & Ashworth, 1989;Shirom, 1989;Cordes & Dougherty, 1993;Shirom, 1989;Spector, 1997;Halbesleben & Buckley, 2004). Thus, as expected, when the perceptions of contingent rewards and operating conditions increased 58 and emotional exhaustion and role conflict decreased for the post-deployees, burnout decreased accordingly.…”

“…Maslach (1976) further defined burnout operationally in three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The emotional exhaustion component of burnout, or the strain linked to tension, anxiety, physical fatigue, and insomnia (Lee & Ashforth, 1990), is considered the essence of burnout (Koeske & Koeske, 1989). Depersonalization refers to the coping mechanism by which an individual attempts to stop the depletion of emotional energy by treating others as objects rather than people (Lee & Ashworth, 1990).…”

“…Also, following his review of evaluation instruments, Carson suggested that the Personal Accomplishment subscale of the Maslach Burnout Inventory was a proxy measure for job satisfaction and recommended that it be used in place of the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale (personal email communication, Carson, 2009). This view, regarding the Maslach Burnout Inventory, seems to have been confirmed by other authors who state that they regard the scale's core component of burnout to be the Emotional Exhaustion subscale (Koeske & Koeske, 1989;Stalker et al, 2007).…”

“…In the revised Empathic Communication Model of Burnout, PA has favorable effects on EE and DP either directly or indirectly 25) . Another study indicated that PA was a moderator which interfered with the process in which stressor affected EE and DP 2,30) . Communication skill training such as AsT was considered to have the possibility to prevent burnout through the improvement of PA.…”
