Constraints on leisure time physical activity at a public university

Abstract: This study focuses on understanding constraints on leisure time physical activity (LTPA) on a university campus. The survey study was conducted with public university students (n=563) living in dormitories. The 38-item, 8-dimension Leisure Time Physical Activity Constraints (LTPA-C) Scale was used to investigate factors limiting LTPA. Age, gender, working status (i.e. part-time, non-working), program type (i.e. morning education, evening education), relationship status (i.e. in a relationship, not in a relatio… Show more

“…With so many hours per day devoted to mobile device use, interventions utilizing PA tracking devices - particularly those able to integrate with a smartphone - may prove to be an extremely powerful tool in future health promotion for students as well as, potentially, the population as a whole. Lifetime health habits and behaviors are heavily influenced by routines developed during college (26). Therefore, utilizing a platform where students are already heavily invested - smartphone-based technology - as a means to promote lifelong health and wellness has the potential to generate a significant, lasting impact.…”

“…In terms of constraints, gender appears to be the only significant variable affected by intrapersonal, interpersonal and structural constraints. The result is not surprising as literature evidence on gender differences in constraints to PA abound Godbey, 1987 andOcal, 2014). These differences could be attributed to the different ways males and females are affected by these categories of )= Kruskal-Wallis test, df degree of freedom; r = effect size constraints.…”

“…Within the scope of the data obtained, it was determined that the students stated that they benefited sufficiently from the facilities of the university and faculty. The studies conducted (Drakou et al, 2008;Jackson & Henderson, 1995;Öcal, 2014) reveal that situations such as lack of facilities or not being able to benefit from the facilities, both in universities and in daily life, are restrictive of leisure time. Effective use of leisure time, especially by young people, helps both social cohesions become stronger and protects the young population further from harmful habits (Tuncay, 2000).…”
