Constraints on a sub-eV scale sterile neutrino from nonoscillation measurements

Abstract: Anomalies in several short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments suggest the possible existence of sterile neutrinos at about eV scale having appreciable mixing with the already known three neutrinos. We find that if such a light sterile neutrino exists, through a combined study of the leptonic decays of µ − , τ − , π − and K − , some semi-leptonic decays of τ − and the invisible decay width of the Z boson, it is possible to constrain the relevant mixing matrix elements. Furthermore, we compare the constra… Show more

“…Experiments such as DANSS, NEOS, STEREO, and PROSPECT have effectively ruled out significant portions of the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly (RAA) mid-low Δ𝑚 2 region and its best-fit parameters [5][6][7][8]. Investigations into high Δ𝑚 2 values, although posing tensions with cosmological constraints, are being explored through experiments like KATRIN and utilizing solar neutrino data [9] (Figure 2 left). Interestingly, despite the stringent exclusions, individual spectra from experiments such as the DANSS/RENO ratio or the somewhat criticized Neutrino-4 result (2.8𝜎, Δ𝑚 2 ≃ 7.3 eV 2 ) can still accommodate oscillatory behavior [10].…”

“…Finally, we would like to stress that our review is limited to the oscillation phenomenology, although light sterile neutrinos may have an impact also on non-oscillation searches. We mention the studies focused on the leptonic decays of charged leptons and mesons [62], the beta decay [63], and the neutrinoless double-beta decay [64,65].…”

“…This simple strategy has, however, remained unexplored in the currently existing literature. Instead of considering two-body leptonic decays B + → + N , similar to existing studies on π + or K + → + N which look for mono-energetic + to constrain |U N | 2 [88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104][105][106][107], we have considered the threebody semileptonic decays B → D N which have bigger branching ratios in a larger mass range. The reach of our study to constrain |U μN | 2 and |U τ N | 2 is better by an order of magnitude from existing experimental constraints in certain mass ranges of interest.…”
