Ecosystem services (ES), commonly defined as the benefits people get from ecosystems, are key components in improving human well-being. However, as land utilization transitions from forest and agricultural land to urban areas and industrial complexes, the continuous provision of ES is affected. To ensure sustainable development, conservation programs should be implemented that consider both the stakeholders' well-being while also maintaining ecosystem health and integrity. Consequently, to improve the strategic implementation of conservation programs, it is critical to understand stakeholders' preferences.Using an online survey, we elicited South Carolina residents' preference in prioritizing the target ecosystems and ecosystem services in the state. The results identified that the priority ecosystem service is water quality regulation. However, the residents' preference for water quality regulation does not discredit the importance of maintaining the continuous water supply provision. In terms of ecosystem preference, residents indicated that the forest ecosystem is the priority ecosystem to be conserved, particularly for younger residents, respondents with high income, and those in the midland and the upstate. This could be attributed to the forest's effect on the ecosystem services that these respondents receive, particularly towards water-related ecosystem services. Understanding the residents' preference provides information that could improve the state water plans and other potential policy implications to land use-land cover planning and landscape sustainability management.

The exposure of disaster varies based on its surroundings and resilience of the people. Apparently, the southwestern coastal area of Bangladesh is confronting at great risk for its geophysical settings. Notwithstanding, Bangladesh has a long history of coping with disasters and recovery form damages. This study attempted to measure the livelihood sustainability status that had taken by the rural people of Sutarkhali after the severe cyclonic storm Aila occurred in 2009. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted in Sutarkhali union of Dacope Upazila under Khulna District, Bangladesh. Data were collected from different occupational groups living in a coastal community through survey methods using a structured questionnaire. A total of 260 household heads were participated in this study. The study findings reveal that the respondents have changed their livelihood activities after Aila but the livelihood is not sustainable and satisfactory. The overall sustainability score (39.85) identified in this study based on the DFID indicators means, sustainability of the diversified livelihood is unsustainable and less satisfactory. This study also found various constraints towards livelihood sustainability. Based on the weighted average index this study found the major constraints of livelihood sustainability are natural disasters, lack of education, lack of government initiatives etc.

“…The high value of pistachio attracted people and economic activity to the centers of pistachio production, so that the majority of Rafsanjan's inhabitants are currently active in the production, trade and distribution of pistachios: 33% of the township's population is active in agriculture (mainly production of Pistachio), 34% in service jobs (including storage, distribution and trade of pistachio) and 25% in industry [12]. Pistachio export earnings account for around 10 percent of non-petroleum exports by value of Iran [13]. In 2006, 40% of the world production of pistachio came from Iran and 43%, of which came from Rafsanjan [14].…”

Water scarcity is a critical challenge in the Middle East. Historical analysis of case studies indicates that decades of water mismanagement and weak environmental planning play substantial roles in the water crisis. This paper illustrates the conflict between rapid development policies on the one hand and non-sustainable water resource management on the other in Rafsanjan Township, Iran over the period 1986-2014. Secondary literature and government reports are used to analyze the general environmental changes and responsive actions of government. A time series analysis of Landsat images illustrates the effect of economic development policies that have stimulated the expansion of pistachio orchards. Some possible responses based on a long-term socio-ecological resilient planning approach may provide some solutions, but will require a substantial rethinking of current policies and water management practices.
