Constituents, Oxidant-Antioxidant Profile, and Antimicrobial Capacity of the Essential Oil Obtained fromFerulago SandrasicaPeşmen and Quézel

Abstract: Chemical constituents, total phenolic content, total oxidant status, total antioxidant status, lipid hydroperoxides, total free -SH levels, and antimicrobial activity of essential oil obtained from the Ferulago sandrasica (Umbelliferae) were investigated. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus. The chemical constituents were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The main components of the essential oil were ocimene (30.5%), carene-δ-3 (27.4%), and α-pin… Show more

“…Medical herbs are generally rich in phenolic compounds, such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, tannins, stilbenes, lignans, coumarins, and lignins (Celik et al. 2013 ). One of the therapeutic approach for treating diabetes is to reduce the postprandial hyperglycemia and this is made by delaying the absorption of glucose via the inhibition of the carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzyme α-glucosidase in the digestive tract.…”

“…angulata exhibited no considerable biological activities. [46,47] The major components or their derivatives may also contribute to antimicrobial activity, thus it is still worthwhile to test the individual major components also against other pathogens in future works. As far as the mechanism of the antimicrobial activity is concerned, the complex and variable chemical composition of essential oils, which can include many different molecules, prevents the understanding of the mechanism of action.…”

“…The essential oils of F. campestris were determined to have antioxidant and antifungal effects . The essential oils of F. sandrasica were also reported to have antibacterial and antioxidant activities with the emphasis that phenolic compounds may be responsible for the antioxidant activity . Moreover, F. angulata essential oil was determined to have antioxidant activities .…”
