Consistent behavioural traits and behavioural syndromes in pairs of the false clown anemonefish Amphiprion ocellaris

Abstract: Using the social clown anemonefish Amphiprion ocellaris, whether individuals exhibited consistency in activity levels, boldness and sociability in a paired context, and whether these three behavioural traits were positively correlated within a single behavioural syndrome, was investigated. The results highlight that consistent individual differences in behaviour are expressed in a social fish and suggest that consistent behavioural traits and behavioural syndromes could influence the structure and functioning … Show more

“…One interesting hypothesis is that variation in response could be due to variation in personality traits (defined as inter-individual differences in behavior that are consistent over time and across contexts 54 ) of the individuals being tested. Previous studies have demonstrated the existence of personality traits (e.g., boldness, aggressiveness, shyness, sociability, and parenting behaviors) in A. percula 55 , 56 and its sister species A. ocellaris 57 . It was not possible for us to test this idea, or alternative explanations for the variation in response, with our data.…”

“…Activity is a consistent behavioural trait in anemonefish symbionts and a useful measure to monitor acclimation (Wong et al, ). To characterise whether the behaviour pattern of A. ocellaris changed when they encountered different anemone hosts, the fish in each tank were videotaped on the third day after their introduction into the experimental system.…”
