Consensus for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of feline mammary tumors

Abstract: Mammary neoplasms are described as the third most common type of feline tumor, after haematopoietic and skin tumors, and present a challenge for clinicians because the prognosis for feline mammary tumors ranges from guarded to poor. Thus, it is necessary to define new therapeutic approaches and establish more in-depth knowledge about this disease in felines. The main aspects of the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of feline mammary neoplasia were discussed, aiming to standardize the criteria and to serve as … Show more

“…The EGFR antibody detected a 170 kDa band in all samples, which is expected size of the receptor. The EGFR localization was also investigated in CMT that correspond to a less aggressive type of carcinoma in dogs [5, 7]. We have selected six cases of CMT (clinicopathological and survival data are shown in Table 2) that showed better overall survival than IMPC (IMPC, median 120 days; CMT, did not reach median survival; p=0.0017) (Graph 1.).…”

“…The five cases of IMPC evaluated in our study presented poor prognosis, high rates of lymph nodes metastasis, high tumor size and poor overall survival [12-14]. The EGFR is not present within the nucleus or in the INM in CMT, which has better prognosis than other malignant histological types [5, 7]. Bertagnolli, et al , 2011, and Ribeiro, et al , 2012, shown using histopathological analyses that in invasive areas of CMT the EGFR expression is decreased [1, 31].…”

“…Os tumores de mama são frequentes em cadelas e representam aproximadamente 52% de todas as neoplasias nessa espécie, sendo que mais de 75% dos casos são considerados malignos (CASSALI et al, 2014).…”

“…More advanced tumours may require adjuvant therapy (Novosad 2003, Sorenmo 2003), and chemotherapy is often recommended for dogs with mammary tumours considered to be at risk for metastasis or recurrence (Sorenmo and others 2013). However, there is no standard recommendation for the use of chemotherapy (Cassali and others 2014). High-quality trials are needed to evaluate the efficacy of chemotherapy protocols as well as to provide guidance for treating high-risk mammary gland tumours (Sorenmo 2003, Sorenmo and others 2013).…”
