Background: Consanguinity is a traditional phenomenon that is common in many communities worldwide. In Arab countries, its prevalence is considered to be high, despite its decrease in some Arab societies. According to the Arab society in Israel, the rates of consanguineous marriages (CMs) recently were found to be increasing in the last decade. Generally, various socio-demographic factors play an important role in determining the prevalence rates of consanguineous marriages. Objective: The purpose of the current study is to determine the prevalence rates of consanguineous marriages among the Arab society in Israel, relating to various women's socio-demographic factors. The study explored the effect of wives' age at marriage, their educational attainment, their employment, and their income level on consanguinity in this community. Method: The data were obtained from a health national survey that was carried out during the year 2017, among the Arab society in Israel. The subjects supplied the required information about themselves through personal face-to-face interviews using a survey questionnaire prepared specifically for this purpose. A detailed analysis was conducted to determine statistical significance. Result: It was observed that the prevalence rate of consanguineous marriages among the women from the Arab society in Israel seems to be high (~42%). Furthermore, the prevalence rates of CMs were found to be inversely proportional to the wife's age at marriage and their educational attainment. A significant difference could be detected between the rates of CMs and non-CMs in relation to wife's employment factor and wife's income level (i.e., 70% of the employed women had non-CMs and 65% of the high wife's income level had non-CMs

Introduction: Health literacy is defined as the capacity to reach, acquire, understand and interpret health information that protects, enhances, and rehabilitates the health of individuals. It is known that there is a significant relationship between health outcomes and health literacy level. Traditional health practices are the practices of the society applied with beliefs, traditions, values, and cultures. Some of these practices related to behaviors and beliefs in pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period are beneficial for health, some are harmful, and some do not affect. The aim of this study was to investigate health literacy and the applications of traditional practices of women in the postpartum period. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in an obstetrics and gynecology department of a women's and children's health hospital with the 303 women who were delivered. Research data were collected with "Descriptive Prosperities Form", "Traditional Applications Evaluation Form" and "Health Literacy Scale". Results: The mean age of women was 29.19±6.94, and the mean number of childbirth was 3.48±2.14. As traditional practices, the most common practice of women for babies was to cover yellow writing and dress yellow to cure jaundice (72.8%), and the most common practice for the mother in the postpartum period was not to see anyone / not leave the room (63.5%) until postpartum forty days. Women's health literacy scale total mean score was 106.77 ± 16.52. A statistically significant relationship was found between the age groups, educational status employment status, and number of birth of women, and health literacy scale total scores (p<0.05). A statistically significant correlation was found between women's health literacy scale total scores and their frequency of using traditional practices (p <0.001). Conclusions: It was found that women who applied to traditional practices in the postpartum applied negative practices. It is thought that increasing the level of health literacy of pregnant women may decrease negative traditional applications in the postpartum period.

The authors hypothesize that consanguineous marriages remain a risk factor for pregnancy outcomes and offspring mortality in post-globalized India. Data from women aged 15–49 from National Family Health Surveys 4(2015–2016) and 5(2019–2021) were pooled and used for analysis. The study used binary logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard regression models to examine the effects of close (CC) and distant (DC) consanguinity on spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, neonatal mortality, and post-neonatal, child mortality respectively compared to non-consanguinity (NC). The final model showed that the risk of spontaneous abortion was significantly higher for CC (1.32, p < 0.001) and DC (1.62, p < 0.001); while the likelihood of neonatal mortality was significantly higher for DC (1.30, p < 0.01) compared to NC. The risk of post-neonatal mortality was significantly higher for CC (1.49, p < 0.01) and DC (1.87, p < 0.001) compared to non-consanguineous (NC) marriage. No significant association was found between consanguinity and child mortality. We conclude that the endogenous effect of consanguinity still pose a serious challenge to the survival of fetus and new born; but exogenous effect reduces the risk of child death. We propose to incorporate socially entrenched practice of consanguinity explicitly into Mosley and Chen's (1984) framework for the aid in understanding child survival in developing countries.
