Introduction Control of triatomine infestation is a key strategy for the prevention of Chagas disease (CD). To promote this strategy, it is important to know which antecedents to behavioral change are the best to emphasize when promoting prevention. Objective The aim of this study was to determine predictors for intention to prevent home infestation based on the Health Belief Model (HBM), a commonly used health intervention planning theory. Materials & methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 112 heads of household in six communities with endemic and high rates of triatomine infestation in Loja province, Ecuador. The data was collected by a questionnaire including perceived severity, susceptibility, benefits to action, barriers to action, and self-efficacy. These data were also used to predict actual infestation of homes. Results Community members reported strong intentions to prevent home infestation. HBM constructs predicted about 14% of the observed variance in intentions. Perceived susceptibility and severity did not predict behavioral intention well; perceived barriers to small-scale action that reduce likelihood of infestation and self-efficacy in participating in surveillance systems

Velásquez 3 ResumenAntecedentes: el excesivo consumo de sodio se relaciona con enfermedades crónicas degenerativas. Mejor conocimiento poblacional debería influir sobre su menor consumo. Objetivo: comparar el conocimiento y las prácticas del uso de la sal/sodio en la alimentación de adultos de Medellín, Colombia, según el sexo. Materiales y métodos: estudio descriptivo exploratorio transversal, realizado en 155 hombres y 167 mujeres con edades entre 18 y 50 años, de Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia; a quienes se les aplicó una encuesta sobre conocimientos y consumo de sodio. Resultados: se detectaron diferencias significativas (p<0,05) según el sexo, a favor de las mujeres, en el conocimiento de la hipertensión arterial (54,5 % frente a los hombres 43,2 %), uso de sal dietética (53,9 % frente a los hombres 35,5 %) y riesgo para la salud del consumo de sodio en exceso (54,5 % frente a los hombres 43,2 %). Al 79,4 % de las mujeres y al 84,4 % de los hombres les gusta consumir alimentos con sal. Se encontraron incoherencias en la relación entre conocimientos y prácticas alimentarias. El análisis del factor reveló diferencias según el sexo en el consumo de frutas con sal, cerveza michelada y uso de sal dietética (p=0,0004). Conclusiones: existen diferencias según el sexo sobre el conocimiento del sodio y sus efectos sobre la salud. Hay incoherencias entre los conocimientos sobre el sodio y las prácticas alimentarias. The factor analysis revealed differences by sex in consumption of fruit with salt, beer drunk from a salt-rimmed glass, and salt substitutes (p=0.0004). Conclusions: There are differences by sex about the knowledge of sodium and its effects on health. There is inconsistency between knowledge about sodium and dietary practices.

This study aimed to investigate students' views towards salt structure, properties and application areas. "The SALT Comenius Project" initiated activities in 2012. This project was conducted with 10 European countries including Turkey, Germany, Italy, Poland, Greece, Spain, Estonia, Austria, Romania, and Scotland. The aim of this project is to develop friendships between primary school students through science, art, language, technology, and culture and to increase students' attention towards salt in daily life. In the first project meeting, the project partners developed a semi-structured questionnaire to measure students' views about the structure and properties of salt. Participants were 161 primary school students from project partner countries. In this study, Data were gathered by the qualitative research method. In students' views, salt is a substance used in food; salt is gathered only from sea salt; salt is composed of tiny crystals; salt is bad for health; salt is gathered only from rocks.
