“…Social inclusion is "the process of improving the ability, opportunity, and dignity of people, disadvantaged on the basis of their identity, to take part in society" (World Bank 2013) and social exclusion is identified as a problem since it contributes to inequities in many spheres of life including health, education, citizen engagement and employment. To reduce the risk of social exclusion, and to foster inclusion, newcomers can be supported in acquiring new knowledge and skills needed for life in an unfamiliar country, but new thinking is needed to devise learning models that are in tune with these learners' lives and their desire for social interaction (see for example Clyne et al 2013). There is a particularly salient need for recent immigrants to acquire language skills in the host country's official language or languages, including pragmatic or social use of language to build rapport with local residents.…”
