Conjunctival cytology assessment in dogs and cats. Sampling, diagnostic techniques and findings

Abstract: ABSTRACT.The conjunctiva provides a physical and physiological barrier against microorganisms and foreign bodies and also contributes to the ocular immunological defense. It constitutes a straightforward and accessible tissue for sampling and examination. Sampling indications include: changes in color, surface irregularities, thickening, or masses, ocular discharge and the identification of infectious organisms. Samples for conjunctival evaluation may be collected with exfoliative or abrasive techniques, aspir… Show more

“…The presence of binucleated cells is considered as an indicator of reactive changes in areas of severe chronic in ammation. On the other hand, the cytological analysis of the sample taken from the left eye of the same animal demonstrated normal ocular surface cells, similar to descriptions made in previous literature reports (Bolzan et al 2005;Athanasiou et al 2018). In the present study, based on histopathological examination (Fig.…”

“…In agreement with the ndings of previous reports for cytospin slides prepared from samples of animals with keratoconjunctivitis(Cakir et al 2014), the present study revealed the presence of binucleated epithelial cells. The presence of binucleated cells is considered as an indicator of reactive changes in areas of severe chronic in ammation. “…The slide was air-dried and stained using Dip Quik (JorVet, USA). Evaluator I (2 nd author) mostly had theoretical experience in ocular cytology that comprised reviewing of books, pictures, atlases, and online materials [2,[5][6][7][8]. Evaluator II (1 st author) had undergone clinical pathology residency training and had 16 years of practical experience.…”

“…Ophthalmological examination of varying complexity is performed by veterinarians in general practice and veterinary ophthalmologists [1,2]. Microscopic examination is relatively easy to perform, but the usefulness of this test is affected by the sample quality, such as the cellularity, cell preservation, and the evaluator's experience [3,4].…”

“…The use of noninvasive sampling techniques is of interest, especially in feline medicine (Athanasiou et al, 2018). Recently Leishmania DNA was detected from conjunctival (Benassi et al, 2017) and oral swabs of cats (Persichetti et al, 2018).…”
