Congenital Hydronephrosis: Disease or Condition?

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to address the dilemmas of the paediatric surgeon when facing an isolated, unilateral, congenital hydronephrosis and discuss the strategic options for the management of this condition. Congenital hydronephrosis, the most commonly diagnosed uropathy in children, is usually a benign and self-resolving condition. Nonobstructive hydronephrosis does not require operative treatment, while timely treatment is imperative for obstructive hydronephrosis before significant renal damage ensues. Ma… Show more

“…Congenital hydronephrosis is frequently encountered in pediatric urology resulting from ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO). This disease results in many pathological and physiological problems, including renal interstitial edema, focal inflammatory cell infiltration, and degeneration and necrosis of renal tubular epithelial cells, thereby leading to fibrosis and atrophy of renal interstitium eventually [ 1 , 2 ]. Investigation on how to block or reverse the progress of renal tissue impairment is of great significance for clinical treatment.…”

“…To eliminate the cystoscopy and reduce the application of narcotic drugs, surgeons have made some advanced attempts in the procedures which were reported in the literature. [ 2 4 ] Nevertheless, they cannot be accepted by the physician and patients due to the obvious flaws in all these clinical trials, such as costliness, infection or uncomfortableness. In this report, a novel technique without cystoscope has been introduced to remove the retained double J stent under minimal sedation which evidently reduces operation time, costs, postoperative urination discomfort, and hospital stays compared with the cystoscope-assisted procedure.…”

“…
Congenital hydronephrosis, as one of the most common urinary system abnormalities is often found in children with ureteropelvic junction obstruction. [1][2][3] Finding effective, safe and minimally invasive indicators for congenital hydronephrosis evaluation has become a hotspot in current clinical research. Ultrasonography is an easy-to-use, non-invasive and non-radioactive means of examination that can detect morphological damage of hydronephrosis.
