Congenital Granular Cell Epulis

Abstract: Congenital granular cell epulis is a rarely reported lesion of unknown histogenesis with a strong predilection for the maxillary alveolar ridge of newborn girls. Microscopically, it demonstrates nests of polygonal cells with granular cytoplasm, a prominent capillary network, and attenuated overlying squamous epithelium. The lesion lacks immunoreactivity for S-100, laminin, chromogranin, and most other markers except neuron-specific enolase and vimentin. Through careful observation of its unique clinical, histo… Show more

“…[5] The tumor is limited to the soft tissue and does not involve deeper tissues such as bone and teeth. [6] It is important to mention that CGCT does not involve or damage the dentition. Reported dentition damage seems to be an iatrogenic damage related to the surgical treatment.…”

“…[12] Because of the location, potential size of the tumor, and risk of interference with breathing and feeding, complete surgical excision is the treatment of choice. [6][7][8] Recurrence rarely occurs, and the prognosis is reported to be excellent. [13] Spontaneous regression has been reported in isolated few cases and may occur even in case of incomplete resection.…”

“…Although its higher prevalence in girls suggested hormonal impact, the fact that estrogen and progesteron receptors could not be found on tumor cells confuted this assumption. Although malign forms of other GCTs have been observed, no malignancy related with CE has been reported in the literature so far (2,4). Although spontaneous reduction has been reported in the literature, its treatment generally consists of complete excision of the mass.…”

“…1 Among its other designations, congenital granular cell myoblastoma, granular cell epulis of infancy, granular cell fibroblastoma come atop. 2 Histologically, the congenital epulis of newborn usually composes of nests of cells with granular cytoplasm set in a scanty to prominent vasculature. Although some cases reported self-involution, the surgical excision is indicated if it grossly interferes with breast feeding.…”
