Confronting the Insider-Outsider Polemic in Conducting Research with Diasporic Communities: Towards a Community-Based Approach

Abstract: Researchers focusing on diasporic contexts face the difficult task of wearing their “academic hats” while at the same time building meaningful relationships with immigrant communities. This is no more apparent (and important) than with “non-community” (i.e., outsider) researchers. Here diasporic communities, having already experienced the trauma of forced migration, must see the academic researcher as one they can trust and who is invested in their long-term well being. In this paper I address methodological a… Show more

“…Procedural fairness can induce a broad range of emotions in employees, including the feeling of being respected, feeling loyalty to and recognized by a company, feelings of trust, and work commitment (Collet 2008). Contractual control, which stipulates damages from a breach of terms in BIM delivery, affects distributional fairness, which in turn influences efficiency and productivity (Suliman 2007).…”

“…The connection I have with my co-researchers also includes a mutual understanding about the intricacies of conducting research within communities such as ours. I am aware of, and understand, the powerlessness of my co-researchers because of the ineffectiveness and exploitation of other research projects conducted by "outsiders" (Collet, 2008) in the past. I also understand my responsibility to use my privilege and power as a doctoral student researcher to facilitate change.…”

“…Whilst there are a plenitude of studies that examine the roles of ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’ in research contexts with diverse populations, there is increasingly a recognition that these concepts are located more along a continuum rather than as discrete binaries (Carling et al., 2013; Collet, 2008; Merriam et al., 2001). Kusow’s (2003) ethnography of conducting research as a ‘native ethnographer’ demonstrates that what makes a researcher an insider or outsider is contextual, relational and dynamic.…”
