Helopeltis bradyi is often used as for research and is required in large numbers. The insects were obtained from cacao plants and reared with cucumber fruit in the laboratory. This study aimed to determine the biology and demography of H. bradyi reared on cucumber under laboratory conditions. The demographic parameters observed were net reproduction rate (Ro), gross reproduction rate (GRR), intrinsic growth rate (r), average generation period (T), and population doubling (DT). The results showed that the egg stage lasted for 6.33 ± 0.47 days, the developmental period of the I‒V instar nymph was 2.13 ± 0.34, 2.07 ± 0.25, 2.13 ± 0.34, 2.33 ± 0.47, and 3.20 ± 0.40 days. The lifespan of male imagoes were 32.33 ± 4.92 days, and female imagoes were 24.60 ± 6.64 days. The adult female pre-oviposition period was 2.2 ± 0.40 days and oviposition period of 22.9 ± 4.66 days. H. bradyi has a type III survival curve which indicated high mortality rates during the first instar egg and nymph population. Demographic statistics of H. bradyi on cucumbers fruit are GRR of 296 individuals per generation, Ro of 196 individuals per parent per generation, rate of r of 0.18 individuals per parent per day, T of 29.34 days, and DT of 3.85 days.

Helopeltis sp. is one of the major pests of the cocoa plant. Helopeltis can decrease cocoa yield by 50 to 60%. Several species of Helopeltis spp. are still often misidentified due to similarity in morphology such as size and color. This study aimed to identify Helopeltis sp. through DNA barcoding using the mitochondrial cyto- chrome C oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene. Analysis was carried out on 100 adults Helopeltis sp. from Kaliwining Experimental Station, Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI), Jember, Indonesia. Specimens were preserved in 96% ethyl alcohol at 4oC until molecular studies were carried out. PCR amplification was conducted through specific primer from COI gene. Sequences data analysis using MEGA 5.05 software was carried out. The study results using DNA barcoding showed that Helopeltis samples in Kaliwining cocoa plantations are Helopeltis bradyi with a percentage identity above 99% and E value of 0; this sequence as significantly matched. Mean length of the sequences was 679.5 base pairs. Phy- logenetic tree data also shows that the Helopeltis species analysed were also of the same descent, H. bradyi with the accession number KT189562.1. Helopeltis sp. specimens were clustered together. No taxonomic deviation was detected at the species level, indicating that most of the examined species of Helopeltis sp. could be authenticated by the barcode approach using the COI gene. In addi- tion, Helopeltis specimens were also aligned with H. antonii and H. theivora from the genebank to determine their genetic relationship.

ABSTRAK An activity which aim to improve the Dolichoderus sp function in controlled Helopeltis spp which has been implemented in public cocoa garden. The activity is set two artificial nest each at two contrast side on cocoa branch. Result of study is show that cocoa tree after three months of the artificial nest installation the level of Helopeltis spp attack is run in to lower is being 8,86% by first time before artificial nest installation the level of Helopeltis attack is 46,6%. The artificial nest is very help to increase the Dolichoderus sp population. Which knowing as the predator or Helopeltis spp natural enemy on cocoa tree.
