Conducting a meta-analysis in the age of open science: Tools, tips, and practical recommendations.

Abstract: Psychology researchers are rapidly adopting open science practices, yet clear guidelines on how to apply these practices to meta-analysis remain lacking. In this tutorial, we describe why open science is important in the context of meta-analysis in psychology, and suggest how to adopt the three main components of open science: preregistration, open materials, and open data. We first describe how to make the preregistration as thorough as possible-and how to handle deviations from the plan. We then focus on cre… Show more

“…Thus, standards of research quality, transparency, and reproducibility-related practices of meta-analyses need to be high. Tools to help researchers carry out a meta-analysis with the best open practices are available (e.g., Lakens et al, 2016;Moreau & Gamble, 2020), as well as a recent update of the PRISMA statement (Page et al, 2020). We also provide some recommendations in Table 2 which are particularly relevant to researchers carrying out evidence synthesis in the field of clinical psychology.…”

“…R (R Core Team, 2019) is a free and open software environment and programming language that, along with RStudio, facilitates the production of easily-shared analysis scripts. Moreau and Gamble (2020) share a very useful script template for carrying out a meta-analysis with R using the metafor (Viechtbauer, 2010) package in their OSF project: https://osf.io/5nk92/.…”

“…Following recommendations to minimize bias and provide evidence of a priori analyses intentions [17], the study was preregistered under the international prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO; registration number: CRD42020186882) and on the Open Science Framework (OSF; https://osf.io/x2483/). Moreover, all materials and data are available on the OSF page of the project in order to facilitate reproducibility and transparency of this review [18].…”

“…Third, open data (e.g., metadata about each included article, descriptive statistics, notes, and additional information for each study) can provide the basis for further reviews and meta-analyses and increases the transparency about the meta-analytical findings, and again facilitates reproducibility. The tutorial by Moreau and Gamble (2020) serves as an excellent starting point for meta-analysts aiming to conduct transparent, robust, and reproducible research by embracing open science values. The tutorial starts with an introduction to open science more generally and then focuses on specific recommendations regarding meta-analyses (e.g., a comparison of two platforms (Open Science Framework and PROSPERO) for preregistrations taking into account aspects important for meta-analysts.…”
