Research background Each type of administrative unit, including cities, towns and villages, plays a different role in the regional economy. In the case of rural areas, their most important function is agricultural production. Purpose This paper offers a contribution to the discussion on the review of the agricultural development strategy for Lubuskie Province. It attempts to present selected characteristics of the agricultural sector in a cross-section of municipalities of Lubuskie Province against the background of the general features of the agricultural sector in the region. Its purpose is to draw the attention of regional authorities and institutions to the heterogeneity of agricultural development within its territory. Research methodology The research was conducted using a principal component analysis as one of the methods of the graphical presentation of multivariate data. Data from the National Agricultural Census 2020 was used in the analysis. Results The results of the research corroborate the hypothesis of the existence of significant differences in the agricultural sector in the area of the examined rural and urban-rural municipalities in the region, and the need for differentiation of the measures used by the regional authorities to support agriculture in its territorial cross-section. Novelty The paper presents the results of a research on the heterogeneity of the development of the agricultural sector in the municipalities of the examined region. Such an analysis has never before been carried out for the province under consideration.

EU subsidies influence the economic and financial situation of farms through several complex channels, although their economic and financial impact may be observed with a delay. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of selected support instruments of the Common Agricultural Policy, CAP (including direct payments and subsidies from Pillar 2) on economic and financial stability (respectively, the level of net farm income and debt/asset ratio) of farms in EU countries at regional level. The research goals included: (1) to present differences in the level and the structure of instruments of CAP support (excluding investment subsidies) at the level of member states; (2) to determine significance, strength and direction of the relationship between amounts of subsidies received and selected indicators of economic and financial stability of farms. The Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) database provided secondary data for the study. The dynamics of changes was analyzed for years 2007 and 2012. At the country level, the share of subsidies related to rural development programs gradually increased during the years 2007–2012. A weighted regression approach with correction of heteroscedasticity (a total of four models) was employed separately for the 2007 and 2012 (based on data from the FADN regions). Although subsidies (excluding for investment) under the CAP influenced quite strongly the level of agricultural income, the impact of subsidies on the financial stability was ambiguous. This may lead to the refinement of regional approach in relation to the selection of support instruments and the determination of the amounts of support provided under the CAP.

Prediction of global sugar prices after abolition of EU sugar quotas

In the article two main goals were indicated. The first is to verify the hypothesis that there is not a relevant relationship between limiting the impact of state intervention mechanisms and sugar prices on world exchanges. The second goal is to choose the best model for forecasting sugar prices after the abolition of the sugar quotas on domestic markets of sugar producers. The starting point for building the model was the time series of sugar prices on a monthly basis on world stock exchanges – London and New York in 1990–2020. One of the three models was used for forecasting. Sugar prices on world stock exchanges showed large fluctuations amounting to USD cents 28 per pound of sugar for white sugar, while for raw sugar the figure was slightly lower and reached USD cents 26 per pound. On average, in 1990–2020, the nominal price for white sugar was 16 cents per pound, and for raw sugar -12 cents per pounds. However, the level of sugar prices in the world is determined primarily by market factors, rather than administrative constraints.
