Conditional QTL mapping for plant height with respect to the length of the spike and internode in two mapping populations of wheat

Abstract: Plant height (PH) in wheat is a complex trait; its components include spike length (SL) and internode lengths. To precisely analyze the factors affecting PH, two F(8:9) recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations comprising 485 and 229 lines were generated. Crosses were performed between Weimai 8 and Jimai 20 (WJ) and between Weimai 8 and Yannong 19 (WY). Possible genetic relationships between PH and PH components (PHC) were evaluated at the quantitative trait locus (QTL) level. PH and PHC (including SL and inte… Show more

“…In addition, the fact that the loci responsible for SL and PH were detected by the same marker (barc24) on 6B (P < 0.01) suggested that PH and SL might be controlled by the same QTL or by several closely located QTLs. This result differs from previous study (Cui et al, 2011), in which a weak association was found between these two traits. Therefore, although some QTLs only affected PH, other QTLs appeared to have pleiotropic effects on PH and SL.…”

“…Previous studies have also identified QTLs controlling SL on chromosomes 2A and 5A (Cui et al, 2011). However, to our knowledge, none of the loci conferring SL have previously been detected on 6B.…”

“…More recently, a method for multivariable conditional analysis was proposed for analyzing the contributions of individual component traits to a complex trait (Wen and Zhu, 2005). By combining the conditional genetic analysis method with QTL mapping (unconditional QTL analysis), the method was extended to map conditional QTL for the molecular dissection of complex traits (Guo et al, 2005;Zhao et al, 2006;Liu et al, 2008;Cui et al, 2011). Therefore, conditional QTL mapping analysis is an efficient tool for determining relationships between complex traits and their components.…”

“…This method could be used to determine genetic interrelationships between traits at the level of individual QTL, and to find additional QTL that are undetectable with unconditional mapping (Li et al, 2008). This method has been successfully used to analyze QTL by Guo et al (2005), Zhao et al (2006), Liu et al (2008), andCui et al (2011).…”
