Condensed Tannins Content and their Influence on the Antioxidant Activity of Bark Hydroethanol Extract of Piliostigma reticulatum (Dc) Hochst and its Fractions

Abstract: Piliostigma reticulatum (DC) Hochst (Caesalpiniaceae ; Synonym: Bauhinia reticulata) is a plant that grows in the Sahel-Sudan area, from Senegal to Sudan. It is a plant well known to traditional practitioners in Senegal. In Africa, among its organs, leaves and bark are the most used. These are often used against many diseases, such as ulcers 15 , boils, sores, syphilitic cancer, toothache, gingivitis and diarrhea. 16,17 The leaves are used for their ABSTRACT Background: Consumption of natural products from pla… Show more

“…Five mL of each sample were mixed with 5 mL of water and 500 mg of PVPP. After vortexing for 30 s, the samples were maintained at 4 • C for 15 min and then stirred again for 30 s before being centrifuged at 3000× g for 10 min [63]. The supernatant was then collected for further analyses (subfraction Sf).…”

“…This tree is well-known for its bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids, tannins, and alkaloids, which may be found in its bark, leaves, and roots. It is a useful resource in traditional medicine, with a history of usage in treating a variety of diseases because of these bioactive chemicals [5,6]. Previous research conducted within our research team has confirmed that Piliostigma reticulatum (DC) Hochst is abundant in a diverse array of phenolic compounds, all possessing robust antioxidant properties [7,8].…”

“…Tannins are complex organic compounds found in plants as secondary metabolite products. 29,30 Tannins are composed of phenolic compounds which are difficult to crystallize and separate and contain protein which is difficult to precipitate. Tannins also consist of polyphenolic compounds which have antibacterial, antioxidant and astringent activities.…”
