As concussive injuries are garnering increased media attention and public awareness, there is a growing concern for athlete safety. Although athletic trainers and physicians play a large role in keeping athletes healthy and safe, this article investigates nontraditional, multidisciplinary teams that are involved in promoting athlete safety, including the role of equipment makers, coac… Show more

“…Similar results have been reported in studies examining global disability indices [10], such as the extended Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOSE) [21]. Our third finding, on the effects of recurrent injuries, is broadly consistent with the emerging literature on the adverse consequences of sports and combat-related neurotrauma [7,9,1114,4649]. Although replication of this research is needed with larger samples of athletes and using research designs, such as comparisons with sibling controls, that account for confounding factors, our findings suggest that recurrent neurotrauma in any setting may be a causal risk factor for a wide range of social, cognitive, and medical adverse outcomes.…”

“…Although these state concussion laws represent support for quality of care, the laws are difficult to enforce, and there are no outlined penalties for individuals or institutions that fail to comply. 23 The current study did not find that awareness of state concussion laws significantly predicted the implementation of the stepwise progression. It is important to note that approximately 15% of the ATs in this sample either were unaware of the concussion legislation in their state of practice or stated that there was no concussion law in their state.…”

“…Furthermore, concussion assessments commonly used in these settings, including MACE, lack diagnostic utility as early as 12 hours after injury [ 18 ]. Thus, improved, more objective methods for detection and recovery monitoring following concussions are a priority for both athletic organizations [ 19 - 21 ] and US Department of Defense health care providers [ 22 - 24 ].…”
