Allyship is increasingly viewed as a crucial practice to address social and economic inequities faced by marginalized groups. However, little research explores how dominant group members can behave as allies and what marginalized group individuals consider as valuable. Research shows that women faculty in male-dominated academic disciplines regularly experience gendered microaggressions and sexism. In this study, using qualitative narratives from 202 women and men faculty in male-dominated academic departments, we explore women's experiences as recipients of allyship, and men's experiences engaging in allyship. Further, we compare narratives about and from men considered 'good colleagues' versus 'exceptional allies.'The findings reveal that good colleagues engage in an array of interpersonally supportive allyship behaviors (e.g., active listening). In contrast, exceptional allies go beyond them by undertaking consequential and conspicuous actions on behalf of women (e.g., impression promotion), a set of behaviors we term as visible advocacy. By exploring the range of allyship behaviors engaged in by men and viewed by women as valuable, we highlight implications for literature on gender equity and allyship. This study carries practical implications for men who desire to become better allies to women.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the reflections of male harnesses on the Turkish society based on the male harness perspective that supports the social movement of male liberationism in the book the Hazards of Being Male by Herb Goldberg (1992). The social movement of male liberationism, which argues that responsibilities expected of the male individual in terms of proving to the society that he is a real man in processes of socializing establish a hegemony on the man's personality, life, physical and mental health, defends the idea that the patriarchal social structure is harmful for men. Male harnesses determined by Goldberg in a way to support the arguments of the male liberationism movement were listed in the study as label harnesses, activeness harnesses, reservation harnesses and image harnesses. The study included 67 postgraduate thesis that were prepared in the period of 2000-2019 in the field of masculinity, published in the National Thesis Center of YÖK (Turkish Council of Higher Education) and could be accessed as full text which were determined with the method of convenience sampling to be able to trace the reflections in the Turkish society. The included postgraduate theses were analyzed in relation to the determined research questions by content analysis. After examining the thesis quantitatively based on year, level, language, method and topic distribution, labels included regarding male harnesses were qualitatively analyzed. As a result of the analyses, transition stages expected of men in socialization processes which could be associated with the male liberationism movement were encountered. Not all categories of male harnesses could be encountered in the theses made visible by these socialization processes. It was determined that all general titles were included among the encountered categories, but not all harnesses in their details were included in the postgraduate thesis.
