Conceptualizing Big Data: Analysis of Case Studies

Abstract: SUMMARYDigitization and the related datafication produce huge amounts of data. Organizations have started to exploit these new data in order to gain benefits. Exploring this 'big data jungle' is a new area for both scholars and practitioners, and the experiences of early adopters are valuable. This paper analyses big data use cases described in the academic literature by using computerized content analysis methods. Based on the analysis results, we have conceptualized themes and guidelines of big data in the c… Show more

“…Therefore, the more opinions that are analysed, the more precise the results will be on the perceived TDI as a whole. The websites that host OTRs have a lot of free opinions from very different users, and big data technologies facilitate their processing [11,42,43].…”

“…The framework helps to translate the business need into an IT-related requirement: Do we have the hardware and software that is required to gather and process (relatively) low volumes of unstructured data in near realtime? It should, however, be noted that there are technical and data-related challenges (Benabdellah et al, 2016;Ylijoki & Porras, 2016a). Technical challenges are hardware-and software -related, such as managing vast volumes of data with a Hadoop cluster, or using a not only SQL (NoSQL) database to store unstructured data.…”

“…Recently, there has been substantial and almost overwhelming ‘hype’ associated with Bitcoin and the related technologies of blockchain, resulting in comparisons with big data (e.g. Ylijoki & Porras, ) and even some suggestions that blockchain can fix the ‘broken Internet’ (Roberts, ). In July 2016, ‘blockchain’ was almost at the top of the peak of Gartner's hype curve, located between ‘smart robotics’ and the ‘connected home’.…”
