Conceptual Full-Vehicle Development supported by Integrated Computer-Aided Design Methods

Abstract: The research describes the extension of the Axiomatic Design model to incorporate the aesthetic design as the customer requirement. It also proposes a computational model to support the formalization of aesthetic design in industrial products. The methodology takes into account the cognition process during the design generation and captures this behavior in a group theoretic structure. This approach leads to application of Axiomatic Design paradigm to the domain of the aesthetics. The proposed framework is imp… Show more

“…The development process itself starts with the Concept Phase, which includes conceptual design of the complete vehicle layout including styling, vehicle packaging and ergonomics, body and component development, and of course the propulsion system. Beginning with initial styling works, the vehicle architecture is built up and all components are integrated [2]. Drivetrain modules are taken over from existing platforms or newly developed, including new technologies, e.g.…”

“…The challenge in the development of stone chipping investigation is to approximate the simulation as close as possible to reality, and that during early stages of full-vehicle development. This fact requires a detailed consideration of several deciding factors and their evaluation in terms of relevance and necessity regarding the discretized integration into a simulation, [2], [5], [10], [11].…”

“…Multi-layer coatings are applied since a long time in the automotive industry to enhance stone chipping protection, but a widely used application of the measure increases the production costs. Several studies and investigations are concerned with the resistance of coatings or layers as passive protection against failures caused by stone chipping to optimize the coatings and their application methods, [5], [8], [11]. Simultaneously, there also raises the question whether stone chipping can be actively prevented.…”
