Globalization breeds increasing competition. In today's dynamic climate, lean thinking has been found a promising business continuous improvement strategy for improving quality while reducing product cost and delivery time. However, its implementation has dynamic nature of challenges that varies from industry to industry and country to country, necessitating a specific framework by taking all stakeholders onboard. This study aims to propose a lean implementation framework to reduce defects and waste to improve the performance of the metal casting industry. The structure of the framework has been divided into three phases namely the lean conception phase, lean implementation phase, and lean sustainability phase. The proposed framework integrates the six sigma DMAIC methodology with lean tools and techniques to reduce defects and achieve performance improvement. A solid cast software has been used as a computer-assisted casting simulation tool to perform the analysis of defects within the casting. Further, the proposed framework is demonstrated and validated by employing a real-time case study that was manufactured using the sand casting process. The obtained results show remarkable improvements in poured metal weight (33.3%), mold weight including gating system (40%), casting yield (24.56%, rejection rate (90%), and financial saving (24.63%). As a result of analysis of percentage improvements data, the proposed framework can provide the practitioners with a standard roadmap and motivate the casting industries to implement lean for performance improvement through organizational change. Through the effective application of the lean implementation framework, quality enhancement has been demonstrated. Lean production is very widely used and thoroughly tested approach among various enterprises for many decades, its motive is to remove non-value-added activities (waste) from the value stream and make the system highly optimized and efficient. Industry 4.0 is combination of technology driven applications that merge the traditional physical industry to cyber word with the use of digital technology, IoT and sensors etc. In today’s highly competitive and volatile market scenarios it is very hard to fulfill the consumer demands and to produce highly customized quality product, without applications of integrated lean principles and industry 4.0 technologies. This combination known as lean 4.0, is not a replacement for either Industry 4.0 or Lean, but rather a way to improve the performance of the industrial sector. This study looks at how lean manufacturing principles can be used with Industry 4.0 to help India's hard-hit Micro, Small, and Medium-Enterprises (MSMEs). The concepts of lean 4.0 were tested in selected Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises at the NCR region in India. Different parameters of productivity and customer satisfaction index has been compared after traditional lean and lean 4.0 implementation, there is a significant improvement has been observed as a result, another aim of this study is to put effort to persuade MSMEs to accept this fusion in order to boost productivity, quality and customer satisfaction.

Indian MSMEs must respond quickly to the fast-changing requirements using dynamic capabilities gained while adopting strategic changes like flexibility and a lean management system (LMS). The present research aims to review the depth and effect of LMS and the understanding of lean philosophy in Indian MSMEs. First, a systematic literature review (SLR) approach using a four-stage process cycle of Plan-Do-Check-Propose (PDCP) applied with a unique integration of Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) in a Plan-Do-Check-(Analyse/Propose) (PDCP) during analysis and synthesis of the data. The SLR captures the need for lean manufacturing practices and its advantages in MSMEs with critical lean barriers. Next, the Government of India (GOI) measures to promote LMS and "Lack of awareness of lean manufacturing competitiveness scheme (LMCS)" among Indian MSMEs are reported. Finally, the study concludes with gaps and improvements needed to strengthen the effectiveness of the schemes, together with the requirement of studies to appraise the direct effects of GOI promotional measures on MSME's performance in a longer perspective.
