Conceptual design of a rehabilitation device based on cam-follower and crank-rocker mechanisms hand actioned

Abstract: Several works present exoskeletons and devices acting in the hip, the knee and the ankle of patients with some kind of limitation on the lower limbs movement, aiding patients' locomotion/rehabilitation. The challenges in exoskeletons development for paraplegics' locomotion are related with obtaining a compact and low-mass design with long battery life. Furthermore, the robotic devices to lower limb rehabilitation are very expensive complex systems mainly due to the technology of servomotors, drivers and contro… Show more

“…Many research efforts are being spent on making more affordable rehabilitation options that are at least as effective as the ones already presented briefly here. Amongst those devices, linkage-based devices (passive [55][56][57] or motorized) are noteworthy since they present the potential of guiding a kinematically similar movement to healthy gait and have received a lot of attention lately, with a diverse set of different propositions for gait training machines.…”

“…Due to the error in trajectory realizing with linkage mechanisms, researchers also seek the design with higher-pair mechanisms. Goncalves [11] proposed cam linkage mechanism for rehab devices. Shao et al [12] designed a lower limb rehabilitation robot that required only constant-speed motors based on cam-linkages mechanism.…”

“…In recent years, research on rehabilitation robotics has progressed from proposing solutions for the clinical field to more portable solutions tailored to the user’s requirements. However, more efforts are still needed in the development of robotic solutions for neurological rehabilitation that are accessible to a large number of patients as outlined in multiple works such as, for example, reported in ( Volpe et al, 2009 ; Loureiro et al, 2011 ; Yamamoto et al, 2014 ; Copilusi et al, 2015 ; Gherman et al, 2019 ; Gonçalves et al, 2019 ; Vaida et al, 2020 ).…”
