The superlative adhesive properties of some biological attachment systems, such as those of geckos, spiders, and insects, have inspired researchers from different fields (e.g. biology, physics and engineering) to conceive and design man-made microstructured surfaces that might mimic their performance. Among the several proposed designs, very recently mushroom-shaped adhesive microstructures have drawn the interest of scientists and engineers, because experiments have proved their superiority compared to other micro- and nano-structures. In this article, we explain theoretically the physical mechanism behind the enhanced adhesion of such microstructures, and provide for the first time a useful tool to predict adhesive performance depending on the geometry, mechanical properties of the material, and energy of adhesion. Our theoretical predictions are strongly supported by the available experimental data. The present study can streamline the optimisation of adhesive microstructures for industrial applications
This review summarizes recent advances in the area of tribology based on the outcome of a Lorentz Center workshop surveying various physical, chemical and mechanical phenomena across scales. Among the main themes discussed were those of rough surface representations, the breakdown of continuum theories at the nano-and micro-scales, as well as multiscale and multiphysics aspects for analytical and computational models relevant to applications spanning a variety of sectors, from automotive to biotribology and nanotechnology. Significant effort is still required to account for complementary nonlinear effects of plasticity, adhesion, friction, wear, lubrication and surface chemistry in tribological models. For each topic, we propose some research directions.
This paper summarizes the submissions to a recently announced contact-mechanics modeling challenge. The task was to solve a typical, albeit mathematically fully defined problem on the adhesion between nominally flat surfaces. The surface topography of the rough, rigid substrate, the elastic properties of the indenter, as well as the short-range adhesion between indenter and substrate, were specified so that diverse quantities of interest, e.g., the distribution of interfacial stresses at a given load or the mean gap as a function of load, could be computed and compared to a reference solution. Many different solution strategies were pursued, ranging from traditional asperity-based models via Persson theory and brute-force computational approaches, to real-laboratory experiments and all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of a model, in which the original assignment was scaled down to the atomistic scale. While each submission contained satisfying answers for at least a subset of the posed questions, efficiency, versatility, and accuracy differed between methods, the more precise methods being, in general, computationally more complex. The aim of this paper is to provide both theorists and experimentalists with benchmarks to decide which method is the most appropriate for a particular application and to gauge the errors associated with each one
In this paper we extend the theory of contact mechanics and rubber friction developed by one of us (B.N.J. Persson, J. Chem. Phys. 115, 3840 (2001)) to the case of surfaces with anisotropic surface roughness. As an application we calculate the viscoelastic contribution to the rubber friction. We show that the friction coefficient may depend significantly on the sliding direction, while the area of contact depends weakly on the sliding direction. We have carried out experiments for rubber blocks sliding on unidirectionally polished steel surfaces. The experimental data are in a good qualitative agreement with the theory.
The wetting/non-wetting properties of a liquid drop in contact with a chemically hydrophobic rough surface (thermodynamic contact angle theta(e)>pi/2) are studied for the case of an extremely idealized rough profile: the liquid drop is considered to lie on a simple sinusoidal profile. Depending on surface geometry and pressure values, it is found that the Cassie and Wenzel states can coexist. But if the amplitude h of the substrate is sufficiently large the only possible stable state is the Cassie one, whereas if h is below a certain critical value hcr a transition to the Wenzel state occurs. Since in many potential applications of such super-hydrophobic surfaces, liquid drops often collide with the substrate (e.g. vehicle windscreens), in the paper the critical drop pressure pW is calculated at which the Cassie state is no longer stable and the liquid jumps into full contact with the substrate (Wenzel state). By analyzing the asymptotic behavior of the systems in the limiting case of a large substrate corrugation, a simple criterion is also proposed to calculate the minimum height asperity h necessary to prevent the Wenzel state from being formed, to preserve the super-hydrophobic properties of the substrate, and, hence, to design a robust super-hydrophobic surface.
