Concept study of wind power utilizing direct thermal energy conversion and thermal energy storage

Abstract: a b s t r a c tPresent wind power is intermittent and cannot be used as the baseload energy source. Concept study of wind power utilizing direct thermal energy conversion and thermal energy storage named Wind powered Thermal Energy System (WTES) is conducted. The thermal energy is generated from the rotating energy directly at the top of the tower by the heat generator, which is a kind of simple and light electric brake. The rest of the system is the same as the tower type concentrated solar power (CSP). The c… Show more

“…Thermal energy storage (TES) is considered as one of the most important technologies and receiving a lot of attention for thermal applications ranging from heating to cooling in buildings with renewable, continuous, and adaptable supplies. TES already became the second largest energy storage system in the USA [3]. Utilization of thermal energy storage is expected to almost double in 2015 [4].…”

“…This substantially reduces the thermal load on the cell and opens up a possibility of placing additional solar converters in the part of the beam that is directed away from the PV cells, with a corresponding increase in system efficiency. Thus, increased conversion efficiency in a photovoltaic system can be accomplished by splitting the solar spectrum to operate photovoltaic and photothermal processes simultaneously …”

“…The utilization of primary energy, which has an increasing demand, requires the promotion of renewable energy sources and an improvement in energy efficiency. Thermal energy storage is effective for the large‐scale storage of electricity or heat generated intermittently by renewable energy sources, including concentrated solar power (CSP) and wind power . Moreover, thermal energy storage can play a vital role in waste heat recovery, which can improve the energy efficiency of thermal processes .…”
