Concept for an Integrated Ecological Evaluation of Running Waters

Abstract: This strategy paper presents a concept how to assess the ecological quality of running waters in the Federal Republic of Germany. The main cause for this paper is the original draft of an ecological guideline of the European Union (EU) which is going to become a part of a general frame guideline of the EU for waters. This guideline will ask of the European states a valuation of ecological quality of waters which is based on the undisturbed situation of the different aquatic ecosystems. The main basis for an ec… Show more

“…Qualitative concepts (Fig. 4) of interactions between ecological variables are numerous; examples can be found in De Pauw & Hawkes (1993), Braukmann & Pinter (1997) and Lafont et al (2001). A more profound integrated ecological assessment concept was recently established by Verdonschot (2000), based on the 5-S-Model (Verdonschot et al 1998).…”

“…This approach forms the basis of the Austrian method for evaluating the ecological integrity of surface waters [3][4][5] and is also followed internationally, e.g. [6][7][8][9][10][11].…”
