There are multiple factors affecting the behavior of water properties in an estuary, including the hydraulic properties of rivers and corresponding receiving water bodies, along with the potential solutes brought by rivers. Although there are various numerical models and analytical approaches to solving particular or holistic problems in estuaries, measurements are inevitably required. In this study, we developed an innovative low-cost probe based on the Arduino platform as an alternative to more expensive measuring systems. Our device is designed to measure position, temperature, and electrical conductivity in multiple realizations, and it consists of a floating container equipped with the following components: an Arduino Mega development board, a power management module, an SD card logging module, a Bluetooth module, a temperature measuring module, a global positioning satellite (GPS) position module, and a newly developed module for measuring electrical conductivity (EC). We emphasize that all used tools are open-source and greatly supported by the worldwide community. We tested our probe during a field campaign conducted at the estuary of River Jadro near Split (Croatia). Nine probes were released at the river mouth and their position, temperature, and EC were monitored and recorded during the experiment, which ended when the probes stopped, due to the river plume attenuation. The same experiment was repeated three times. All of the probes recorded consistent temperature data, while the EC data show more variable behavior, due to the higher sensitivity of the corresponding sensor. This was expected as a part of the natural process in the estuary. The measured data were additionally used to parameterize an analytical model for mean flow velocity and salinity as a proxy concentration. This showed a good match between the experimental results and the theoretical framework. This work, although focused on water surface applications in the near field zone of an estuary, should be considered as a promising step toward the development of innovative and affordable measurement devices.

SažetakRijeke su svakako jedan od najvažnijih puteva prijenosa nutrijenata s kopna u obalne vode, koji potom u ušćima mogu izazvati čitav niz problema, od prekoračenja dopuštenih graničnih koncentracija do uzrokovanja pojave eutrofikacije. Provedeno istraživanje se bavi upravo analizom takvog pronosa u bliskoj zoni ušća za stacionarno stanje toka te domenu integriranu po dubini (2D). Iz osnovne advektivno difuzne jednadžbe su izvedeni statistički apsolutni momenti funkcije gustoće vjerojatnosti definirane u točki, te su potom pripadajuće funkcije rekonstruirane korištenjem beta-distribucije. Funkcije gustoće vjerojatnosti su ključan podatak za definiciju rizika od prekoračenja graničnih koncentracija, te ovakva metodologija omogućava izračun funkcije i pripadajućeg rizika u proizvoljnoj točki domene ušća. Razvijena metodologija je implementirana u user-friendly računalnu aplikaciju CPoRT koja je besplatna za korištenje, a koja je među ostalim namijenjena i podizanju svijesti o važnosti adekvatnog upravljanja količinama nutrijenata unesenih rijekama.Ključne riječi: koncentracija zagađenja, statistički momenti koncentracije, ušća, funkcija gustoće vjerojatnosti, alat za brzu procjenu rizika od zagađenja Estimation of statistical parameters of nutrients concentration generated in estuaries AbstractRivers are considered as one of the most influential pathways of nutrients which are generated inland and causing multiple problems when brought to estuaries, from exceeding the limit concentrations to eutrophication issues. This paper investigates such problem in estuary by analysing the steady transport of conservative pollutant in the near field zone of depth integrated domain (2D). The concentration moments are developed from fundamental advection-diffusion equation, and then are utilized to obtain the point concentration probability density function (PDF). PDFs are key data when conducting the risk assessment for exceeding the allowed concentration values, hence this methodology enables one to obtain PDF and corresponding exceedance probability at an arbitrary point in the estuary domain. The developed methodology is further implemented in a user-friendly PC application that is free to use and which is also designed to raise awareness about importance of adequate management of nutrients being generated and brought in by rivers.

Abstract:River estuaries represent one of the most valuable and nevertheless most fragile ecosystems. By their own definition they act as an interactive border between river and sea, hence obtaining characteristics of both environments and yet unique ones such as brackish water or funnel shape. On the other hand, human impact is great at such coastal ecosystem due to multiple interests involved, ranging from agricultural via transportation to recreational activities. The river generated pollution is one of the most important threats to estuary ecosystem; hence this research investigates the potential of integrated concentration statistics as a measure of dilution and risk assessment. Previous work conducted includes the definition of pollution concentration moments and corresponding probability density functions. Hence, based on developed simple analytical solution for obtaining the moments, a more robust measure of dilution is introduced -expected mass fraction. The concept of expected mass fraction was previously used by several authors concerning the dilution processes in environmental flows. Being applied for an estuarine system for the first time, such measure is defined by spatial integration of point statistics over available volume. The result is an estimate of pollutant mass existing at some downstream distance which has the concentration above defined limit value. That kind of information gives potentially useful loading estimate when doing pollution risk assessment of the estuary ecosystem.
