Concentration and Detoxification of Kraft Prehydrolysate by Combining Nanofiltration with Flocculation

Abstract: The prehydrolysate stream from a Kraft dissolving pulp mill can be valorized by fermentation of the hemicellulosic sugars into biofuels or bioproducts, such as ethanol or butanol, instead of the typical practice of combustion to produce energy. An obstacle facing the use of Kraft hemicelluloses prehydrolysate for biofuels production is the low sugar concentration and the presence of fermentation inhibitors that include organic acids, furans and phenolic compounds. A precondition to ensure the survival of the f… Show more

“…Strategies are needed to produce sufficiently refined sugars from wood that are competitive with corn dextrose as a feedstock for fermentation to platform chemicals. Cost-effective removal of inhibitors will be a key part of developing commercial processes for wood sugars (Ajao et al 2015;Mechmech et al 2015;Nwaneshiudu and Schwartz 2015). Simple processes such as over-liming have been effective in detoxifying acid hydrolysates of wood chips for ethanol production (Mendes et al 2011).…”

“…They can damage the structure of the cell membrane and the ability of microorganisms to absorb sugars, which makes them very toxic for the ABE fermentation [8]. The reduction of the phenolic compounds concentration by flocculation was significant [4]; however, it was not sufficient to improve fermentation yield. The conventional treatment of the pre-hydrolysate cannot reduce the concentration of phenolic compounds below the inhibition limit, as set by Mechmech et al [9].…”
