Computerized Tomography Cystography for the Diagnosis of Traumatic Bladder Rupture

Abstract: CT cystography provides expedient evaluation of bladder rupture due to blunt trauma and has accuracy comparable to that reported for plain film cystography. We recommend CT cystography over plain film cystography in patients undergoing CT for other injuries associated with blunt trauma.

“…Most spontaneous bladder ruptures occur as the result of long-term indwelling catheters, radiation, chronic cystitis, bladder distention due to infravesical obstruction, or neurogenic bladder dysfunction [1]. However, bladder perforation associated with bladder cancer is an extremely rare cause of spontaneous rupture [2,3]. Such rupture is a surgical emergency that may be rapidly fatal if its diagnosis and treatment is delayed or missed.…”

“…This can be best done by CT imaging. 6,7 Having ruled out renal injury one can then concentrate on carrying out investigations for urinary bladder injury. A CT cystogram or plain cystogram is diagnostic.…”
