Computer-generated holograms using multiview images captured by a small number of sparsely arranged cameras

Abstract: Computer-generated holograms (CGHs) using multiview images (MVIs) are holograms generated with multiple ordinary cameras. This process typically requires a huge number of cameras arranged at high density. In this paper, we propose a method to improve CGH using MVIs that obtains the MVIs by using voxel models rather than cameras. In the proposed method the voxel model is generated using the shape-from-silhouette (SFS) technique. We perform SFS using a small number of cameras arranged sparsely to create voxel mo… Show more

“…This method generates a hologram pattern from a series of 2-D images captured from different viewing positions on the hologram plane. Although the multiview-image method can be realized with holographic stereogram [73][74][75][76] or raywavefront conversion 77-84 approaches, they both acquire the complex amplitudes of a 3-D scene from the 2-D images using Fourier transforms. Hence, CGH calculations in the multiview-image method can be accelerated with FFT.…”

“…Holography 1 [1], including optical holography, computer generated holography (CGH) and digital holography (DH) are being actively researched at the time of writing [2]- [6]. In [4], CGHs were generated using a small number of multiview images captured by appropriately arranged cameras. An efficient generation of the CGH was proposed in [6].…”

“…Note that light ray field L(x = ms, y = ns; θ x , θ y ) for each section is actually a perspective view of the 3D scene at the section center (x = ms, y = ns), with the field of view given by Equation (8). Therefore, a few techniques that use the multiple-perspective views to synthesize the hologram [7,8] can also be classified as ray-based methods.…”
