Computer-aided Shaft Design and Selection of Rolling-contact Bearings Using an Expert System

Abstract: In this study, a computer program was developed using Q-Basic programming language to analyze the strength and deformation of a rotating circular stepped shaft. These shafts have a variety of powertransmitting mechanical elements (components), such as pairs of gears, and pulleys that are modeled in 3-D. In addition, force and moment analyses of these elements running on the shafts are examined. Notch sensitivity and stress concentration factors given graphically were formulated using the finite difference meth… Show more

“…The general numerical formulations of these K T values are derived and originated based on the D/d as listed in [11]. The total K T obtained at the point of the geometrical discontinuity is generalized as seen in Equation (2).…”

“…The deflection analysis cannot be performed without defining the entire shaft geometry. The deflection is a function of the entire geometry, whereas the stress at a section of interest is a function of local geometry and moments [11].…”

“…Analysis of deflection-and-rigidity covers bending and torsional moments, deflections, and slope at the bearing locations, while the analysis of the stress-andstrength covers fatigue strength and reliability [2]. Free vibration analysis aims to obtain the lowest few natural frequencies of the general eigenvalue problem by using Lanczos algorithm coupled with simultaneous iteration method.…”

“…Using the shoulders of the stepped shaft, these components, including rollingcontact bearings, can be assembled and aligned with the coordinate system of the shaft. In the case of designing such a stepped shaft, it is necessary to realize that a stress analysis of a specific point on a shaft can be made using only the shaft geometry in the vicinity of that point [2]. A computer-aided design of a shaft limited in 2D conditions was studied, assuming that power-transmit elements were assembled and subjected to imaginary forces.…”
