Summary This retrospective study describes the computed tomography (CT) findings in 59 horses presented with diseases of the head over 8 years that underwent CT examination of this region, including dental or sinonasal diseases (Group A) (n = 42), osseous and/or articular diseases (Group B) (n = 11) and soft tissue diseases (Group C) (n = 6). For Group A, radiographic and CT findings comparison was possible. Computed tomography had higher sensitivity (100%) and specificity (96.7%) than radiography in diagnosing dental disease. Compared to CT, radiographic identification of sinus involvement was less sensitive, particularly for ventral conchal and sphenopalatine sinuses and presented an overall sensitivity of 43.5 and 16.7%, respectively. In Group B CT allowed identification of a higher number of bone fragments and fractures in the maxillary, lacrimal, sphenoidal, temporal and zygomatic bones not identified radiographically. Accurate identification of CT changes in the temporomandibular joint and temporohyoid articulation was also possible. Group C included both intra‐ and extra‐cranial disease, retrobulbar masses being the most representative pathology (n = 3). In this group, CT was considered the gold standard for detection of periorbital diseases. We conclude that CT is an imaging technique with high diagnostic value for evaluating the equine head, yielding additional information over multiple radiographic views, which may alter the outcome of the case. Additionally, this paper reports several conditions not previously described using CT.

A sound knowledge of dental and periodontal anatomy provides the basis for an accurate diagnosis of dental abnormalities. It must be remembered that dental and periodontal anatomy, especially in the horse, undergoes continuous morphological changes throughout life. From birth to age about 6 years the deciduous and later the permanent teeth emerge in turn through the oral mucosa. Even the permanent dentition is subjected to continuous, dynamic, morphological changes due to massive occlusal wear and the compensatory tooth eruption that is necessary in herbivores. Consequently, it is not surprising that the normal equine oral anatomy of structures shows a wide range of variations. The purpose of this tutorial article is to review and summarise the current knowledge of equine dental and periodontal anatomy, paying special attention to age related morphological changes.

In einer klinischen Studie konnten mit der Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) bei 17 Pferden Erkrankungen der Backenzähne nachgewiesen und differenziert werden. Die Veränderungen wurden mit Befunden verglichen, die bei 47 Pferden ohne Zahnerkrankungen erhoben wurden. Von allen Pferden wurde der Zahnstatus erhoben und es lagen Röntgenuntersuchungen vor. Abweichende und normale Befunde wurden beschrieben und zugeordnet. Zähne und umgebende Strukturen können mit der MRT gut beurteilt werden. Obwohl Zahnhartsubstanzen und Alveolarknochen signallos erscheinen, sind sie eingeschränkt beurteilbar. Folgende Strukturen werden beschrieben: Zähne und ihre Umgebung, Angesichtsdeformationen mit und ohne Fistelbildung, Wurzelspitzengranulome, überzählige Zähne, Zahnkeime sowie Veränderungen des Canalis infraorbitalis. Dabei wird das physiologische und pathologische Bild gegenüber gestellt. Die Beurteilung der Zähne ist trotz der eingeschränkten Hartsubstanzdifferenzierung durch die MRT möglich. Über Pulpen, den Zahnhalteapparat, den umgebenden Knochen oder die Zahnanlagen können wertvolle Zusatzinformationen gewonnen werden.Schlüsselwörter: MRT / Pferd / Kopf / Backenzähne / Zahnerkrankungen Diagnostic of equine cheek tooth diseases with magnetic resonance imagingEquine cheek tooth diseases diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could be detected and differentiated in a clinical study with 17 diseased horses. Normal findings and changes were described and assigned. Judgement of teeth and surrounding tissues was based on MRI images was very good. Although dental hard tooth substance and alveolar bone do not appear with a signal they could be judged with restriction.
