Computed tomography of pulmonary metastases from osteosarcoma: The less poor technique. A study of 51 patients with histological correlation

Abstract: CT positive predictive value is limited, but as surgery is the only way to cure metastatic patients, CT will still be used as the reference technique until a more specific approach can be found.

“…The determination or presumption of pulmonary metastases is usually made based on the clinical details, including the radiographic findings, growth characteristics, presence of extrapulmonary metastases, and histological confirmation. However, there are no management guidelines for small pulmonary nodules detected on CT [5][6][7], when the nodules are too small to either biopsy or excise. The purpose of this study was to establish management guidelines for such small nodules in the sarcoma patients.…”

“…In addition, the specificity of CT in evaluating the nature of a pulmonary nodule, especially when small, is still limited, and only biopsy or nodule excision are able to reveal the benign or malignant nature of the nodule through histological examination whereas evolution of the radiological finding can only guide the diagnosis between benign or malignant nodular opacities [26].…”

“…Lung nodules discovered on CT are biopsied or resected. Solitary nodules represent pseudometastasis in about 25% of cases [46]. Pseudo-metastases should always be confirmed in patients with OS.…”
