Computed tomography and cross‐sectional anatomy of the head in the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla)

Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify the anatomical structures in the head region of the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) using computed tomography. For this, three giant anteater corpses, adult and female, were used. The tomographic analysis was performed in sequential order in rostrocaudal direction. Subsequently, the heads of these animals were sectioned in cross sections of approximately 1.5 cm each. Tomographic images were compared with anatomical sections. The association between computed tomogr… Show more

“…With regard to giant anteaters, the gross morphology of the upper respiratory system was first investigated in 19th century by Owen (1854). Recent studies approached aspects of the anatomy of the lower respiratory system (Giraldi et al, 2017; Oliveira et al, 2020), as well as of the upper respiratoy system of this species (Borges et al, 2017; Farha et al, 2021; Naples, 1999). However, this is the first study to date that describes a more detailed anatomy of the pharynx and larynx of M. tridactyla , including the histological aspects of these organs.…”

“…Additionally, the geometry and tonometry of the eyeball were described in the sloth (Braz et al, 2020). Ophthalmic examination and computed tomography were performed in other species from Pilosa order (Farha et al, 2011; Rodarte‐Almeida et al, 2021). According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, southern two‐toed sloth is classified as Least Concern (LC), considering its wide distribution and presence in various protected areas (IUCN; Species.org).…”
