Computational memory architectures for autobiographic agents interacting in a complex virtual environment: a working model

Abstract: In this paper, we discuss the concept of autobiographic agent and how memory may extend an agent's temporal horizon and increase its adaptability. These concepts are applied to an implementation of a scenario where agents are interacting in a complex virtual artificial life environment. We present computational memory architectures for autobiographic virtual agents that enable agents to retrieve meaningful information from their dynamic memories which increases their adaptation and survival in the environment.… Show more

“…Recently, several general memory frameworks for IVAs were presented [3,9,10,16,18]; however, the degree to which they address any issue of spatial cognition is minimal. Fortunately, several works directly focussing on some aspects of spatial cognition for IVAs have emerged to increase believability of their spatial behaviour, including mapping, localisation, and navigation.…”

“…Since enhancement of integration in a cultural group relies both on the understanding of the internal states of the persons involved and their affective engagement, both cognitive [13] and affective [14] empathy are relevant. Additionally, previous experience is crucial in maintaining long-term social relationships, which means a requirement for an autobiographic memory [15] is inevitable. Through an ability to retrieve previous experiences from its autobiographic memory, an NPC will be able to know how to react sensibly to a similar future situation.…”
