Computation in networks of passively mobile finite-state sensors

Abstract: The computational power of networks of small resource-limited mobile agents is explored. Two new models of computation based on pairwise interactions of finite-state agents in populations of finite but unbounded size are defined. With a fairness condition on interactions, the concept of stable computation of a function or predicate is defined. Protocols are given that stably compute any predicate in the class definable by formulas of Presburger arithmetic, which includes Boolean combinations of threshold-k, ma… Show more

“…We require the following theorem, due to Angluin, Aspnes, Diamadi, Fischer, and René [1], which states that any semilinear predicate can be decided by a CRD in expected time O ( n log n ). (This was subsequently reduced to O ( n ) by Angluin, Aspnes, and Eisenstat [3], but O ( n log n ) suffices for our purpose.…”

“…There is a formal sense in which chemical reaction networks have been shown to be able to compute functions f : N k → N [8] and predicates N k → {0, 1} [4]. A function/predicate can be computed "deterministically" (i.e., regardless of the order in which reactions occur) ⇐⇒ it is semilinear (see [20] for a definition).…”

“…As an example, some peer-to-peer file-sharing systems assume the peers are anonymous [12]. In the same vein, not all the sensor networks assume that each sensor has a proper identity [2,18].…”
