The conventional approach in the tablet formulation of acetaminophen (ACM) suggests the use of five or more different excipients in a wet granulation tableting process. The use of many excipients in tablet formulation may negatively create excipient-excipient interactions, excipient-drug interactions, exaggerated product side effects, and high drug load. Cutting-edge technology would be the use of one excipient with a quadrupled functional purpose (4-in-1) by direct compression tableting. In this study, a novel two-phase process called "alkaline-steeping/retrogradation" (ASR) is employed to obtain the desired starch polymer excipient of quadrupled functional purpose. In phase I, the biopolymer is extracted from the unripe fruits of Musa acuminata by a modified alkaline solution steeping method, while in phase II, 50% w/w of the extracted polymer is retrograded. The retrograded product is re-mixed with the non-retrograded 50% w/w that is left from phase I. This gives a novel 50-50% w/w blend named Musa acuminata advanced starch polymer (MAP). To authenticate the efficiency of the ASR, the physicomechanical, analytical, and drug release properties of different concentrations of MAP/ACM solid systems are characterized to ascertain the compatibility. The ASR method produces a unique semi-hygroscopic biopolymer excipient of quadruple-function in ACM high-dose tablet formulation by direct compression.

Centrapalus pauciflorus is a herbaceous plant that is used as a traditional medicine and a source of epoxidised oil. This study is aimed at providing a critical review of the pharmacological properties, phytochemistry and medicinal uses of C. pauciflorus. Documented information on the pharmacological properties, phytochemistry and medicinal uses of C. pauciflorus was collected from several online sources, which included Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed and Science Direct, and pre-electronic sources such as scientific publications, these, books, dissertations, book chapters and journal articles. This study showed that the leaves and epoxidised oil of C. pauciflorus are used as traditional medicines for external injury, wounds, diabetes, chest pains, eye infections, stomach problems and skin infections. Phytochemical compounds identified from the species include coumarins, essential oils, fatty acids, flavonol glycosides, phenolic acids, sterols, sesquiterpene lactones, triterpenoids, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, carotenoids, flavonoids, polyuronoids, saponins, steroids, tannins and terpenoids. Pharmacological research revealed that C. pauciflorus extracts and compounds isolated from the species have analgesic, anti-dermatitis, antimicrobial, antiulcerogenic, hypoglycemic, insecticide, larvicidal and sedative activities. Centrapalus pauciflorus should be subjected to detailed phytochemical, pharmacological and toxicological evaluations aimed at correlating its medicinal uses with its phytochemistry and pharmacological activities.

This work proposes to study the compression behavior of the directly compressible excipients microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). Many factors play a significant role in the compression behavior, such as the particle size and particle size distribute, flowability, particle density, porosity and so on, thus making it necessary to understand the dominant contribution of each factor. We studied the compression behavior of different types of MCC from three aspects: the physicmechanical properties, compression process and tablet mechanic characteristics of the excipients. As expected from the elastic recovery measurements, the MCC gave coherent tablets that could be handled under the chosen experimental conditions.
