This paper explores the possibility to use shredded thermoplastic laminates as one of the plies within a laminate. The focus lies in potential performance decrease due to the presence of such compounds within the laminate. For this purpose, a typical application of a stampformed thermoplastic-based laminate is taken as a basis. In this application, the replacement of mid-plane layers by a moulding compound is considered. The performance knockdown is evaluated using a series of tests typically related to the application. The results of bending, bearing and curved beam tests are reported and analysed. The results show that the replacement of continuous fibres by shredded laminates does not affect significantly the performance of the material for the chosen properties. The applicability of such hybrid laminates is further discussed based on these results.

In this paper we alleviate limitations of the conventional embedded reinforcement formulation for applications with dense fiber contents. We demonstrate that by condensing the fiber degrees of freedom during the assembly stage, the condition number of the resultant stiffness matrix is effectively reduced and the use of iterative solvers is facilitated even without preconditioning. Numerical benchmarks consisting of very large numbers of high aspect ratio discrete fibers are performed, and major advantages are reported in terms of the computational efficiency of the solution method. We apply the solution method to a set of examples in the modeling of the fiber reinforced composites, specifically the estimation of the homogenized mechanical properties of the discontinuous fiber composites and modeling of the compression molding process. In the latter case, a specimen containing more than 2 million discrete fibers is analyzed.

A B S T R A C TRecycling of thermoplastic composites has attracted considerable attention in the recent years. Several recycling solutions include shredding scrap to centimetre-sized flakes to retain long fibres, followed by a remanufacturing step that prevents fibre breakage. Determining the exact fibre length distribution (FLD) for these routes is crucial, as it is of importance for the processibility of the material as well as the mechanical performance of the recycled parts. In this paper, novel analysis methods are introduced to calculate FLDs based on photographs of flakes. The reliability of the method and of the sampling was found to be high. The relation between flake size and FLD was studied, showing that offcut layup barely influences the FLD in comparison to flake size. The effects of shredding settings and sieving were studied, showing a strong correlation between machine parameters and FLD, whereas the offcut size was found to have no effect on FLD.
