Compressed Sensing in a Fully Non-Mechanical 350 GHz Imaging Setting

Abstract: We investigate a single-pixel camera (SPC) that relies on non-mechanical scanning with a terahertz (THz) spatial light modulator (SLM) and Compressed Sensing (CS) for image generation. The camera is based on a 350 GHz multiplier source and a Golay cell detector. The SLM consists of a Germanium disc, which is illuminated by a halogen lamp. The light of the lamp is transmitted through a thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD). This enables the generation of light patterns on the Germanium disc, w… Show more

“…Since then, other techniques have been used to create reconfigurable masks. In [109] and [110], spatially distributed photo excitation of charge carrier density in a semiconductor wafer was utilized to alter the THz attenuation. In [111], Watts et al report on a THz SPC with an electronically programmable metamaterial mask.…”

“…Such technique was used to spatially map the front of the THz beam and also showed the possibility of tracking moving objects. S. Augustin et al 51 employed a liquid crystal-based SLM to impress the pattern shapes onto the optical beam coming from a halogen lamp. Silicon was substituted with germanium for photo-modulation, since the lower bandgap of the latter allowed the use of less photo-modulating power.…”

“…Following the initial idea various configurations have been realized since then [8]- [11]. In these systems THz sources such as a THz time-domain system [8], [11], a multiplier source [10] or an incandescent light source [9] have been used in combination with a single detector pixel. To achieve the dynamic change of the patterns an optical modulation technique is combined with a SLM for visible light.…”
