Industrial activities in coastal areas can produce pollutant substances that are detrimental to the ecological environment. This study aimed to assess the ecological risks of heavy metal pollution in water, sediments, and polychaeta (Neoleanira tetragona) affected by aquaculture, urban rivers, and ports. Water parameters such as temperature, DO, pH, and salinity were measured in situ at fifteen observation stations. Samples were taken at three locations around the aquaculture area, namely the Barong River, the Musi River Estuary as an urban river area, and Tanjung Api-api port in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Analysis of sediment grain size and substrate types using the method of Shepard's triangle Heavy metal concentrations were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Then, the data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Tukey statistical analysis. Ecological risk assessment uses the bioconcentration factor (BCF), index geoaccumulation (Igeo), contamination factor (Cf), and pollution load index (PLI). Based on the results, the concentration of heavy metal Pb in water was not detected until 0.625 mg/L, and Cu was not detected. Furthermore, Pb in sediments was 1.261-11.070 mg/kg, Cu was 0.193-19.300 mg/kg, Pb polychaeta was not detected until 0.0044 mg/kg, and Cu ranged from 0.0003-0.0014 mg/kg. Ecological risk assessment for BCF showed that the level of accumulation of polychaeta (N. tetragona) was categorized as an excluder (BCF < 1). Igeo and Cf indicate uncontaminated pollution levels (Igeo < 0) and low contamination (Cf < 1). Meanwhile, the Pollution Load Index is included in the nonpolluted category (PLI <0). Based on the results, the quality of the ecological environment affected by aquaculture, urban rivers, and ports is still classified as safe for ecological risk assessment; further studies are needed regarding the relationship between pollution levels and the physiological response of biota.

Environmental risk assessment of Pb, Cu, Zn, and Cd concentrations accumulated in selected mangrove roots and surrounding their sediment. Biodiversitas 24: 6733-6742. Mangroves as the largest coastal ecosystem can accumulate heavy metals from their environment. This study aimed to evaluate the environmental risk associated with heavy metal pollution accumulated in the roots of mangroves and the surrounding sediments. The mangrove roots consisted of three species Sonneratia caseolaris, Rhizopora apiculata, and Xylocarpus granatum, collected from three observation stations within the Payung Island mangrove ecosystem in South Sumatra, Indonesia. The concentrations of heavy metals were determined using atomic absorption spectrometry. Statistical analysis employed one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). At the same time, ecological risk assessment utilized the Bioconcentration Factor (BCF), Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Contamination factor (Cf), and Pollution Load Index (PLI). The highest sediment concentrations of heavy metals at station 3 were 12.786±0.26 mg/kg for Pb, 10.413±0.011 mg/kg for Cu, 42.752±0.053 mg/kg for Zn, and Cd was not detected. In mangrove roots, the highest concentrations were found in S. caseolaris, with 2.596±0.002 mg/kg for Pb and 11.881±0.015 mg/kg for Zn, while X. granatum exhibited 8.850±0.011 mg/kg for Cu and 0.160±0.020 mg/kg for Cd. BCF values <1 were categorized as exclusion, Igeo<0 indicated non-contamination, Cf<1 signified low pollution, and PLI<0 denoted an unpolluted status. Based on the results, the quality of the mangrove ecosystems affected by heavy metal pollution is currently considered safe regarding environmental risk assessment.

The water from the high Andean rivers is peculiar due to its composition and the geomorphology of its sources, and naturally or anthropogenically contamination is not discarded along its course. This water is used for agriculture and human consumption, therefore knowing its quality is important. This research aimed to proposing and formulate a water-quality index for high Andean basins through the Delphi method, and its application in the Chumbao River located in Andahuaylas-Peru. Forty-three water-quality parameters were evaluated through the Delphi method, and the water-quality index (WQIHA) was formulated with a weighted average of the weights of the selected parameters, it was compared with the WQI Dinius. For this purpose, ten sampling points were considered along the Chumbao River located between 4274 and 2572 m of altitude and the WQIHA was applied. In addition, field and laboratory analyses were carried out in 2018, 2019, and 2021, in dry and rainy seasons. Twenty parameters were grouped in the physicochemical sub-index (SIPC), heavy metals sub-index (SIHM), and organic matter sub-index (SIOM). Each group contributed with weights of 0.30, 0.30, and 0.40, respectively, for the WQIHA formulation. The SIPC and SIOM showed that the areas near the head of the basin presented excellent and good quality, while the urbanized areas were qualified as marginal to poor; SIHM reported good quality in all points and seasons. Regarding the WQIHA, the index shows good quality in the zones above 3184 m of altitude, contrasting with poor quality downstream, decreasing notably in both seasons, suggesting continuous degradation of the water body.
