Comprehensive data of 3,820 patients newly diagnosed with colorectal liver metastasis between 2005 and 2007: report of a nationwide survey in Japan

Abstract: To collect big data for further research to improve treatment outcomes in patients with colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM), the Joint Committee for Nationwide Survey on CRLM was established by the Japanese Society for Cancer of the Colon and Rectum and the Japanese Society of Hepato‐Biliary‐Pancreatic Surgery. The joint committee initiated data collection since 2014. The data of 4,237 patients newly diagnosed with CRLM between 2005 and 2007 were registered from 134 departments of 127 institutions (64%) among 2… Show more

“…Data of 3820 patients who were newly diagnosed with CRLM between 2005 and 2007 were retrospectively registered. 11,12 In this study, we analyzed data from this cohort and further conducted a sub-analysis focusing on the outcomes of liver resection for CRLM in the presence of extrahepatic disease. The database provided a comprehensive dataset, which encompassed baseline characteristics, preoperative assessment, surgical treatment, histopathology, and the postoperative course of all included patients.…”

“…The database provided a comprehensive dataset, which encompassed baseline characteristics, preoperative assessment, surgical treatment, histopathology, and the postoperative course of all included patients. 11 In this study, colorectal cancer patients who met the following criteria were selected: (a) CRLM and extrahepatic metastasis were detected concurrently, and (b) underwent liver resection with curative intent. CRLM patients with concurrent extrahepatic disease were clinically diagnosed regardless of histopathological confirmation of the diagnosis.…”

“…In most patients with metastatic liver disease, curative surgery is not feasible because of the presence of concomitant extrahepatic metastases. Hepatectomy is widely accepted for isolated resectable liver metastasis from colorectal carcinoma or a neuroendocrine tumor, and there is sufficient evidence of its effectiveness , but the role of hepatectomy in the treatment of non‐colorectal non‐neuroendocrine liver metastasis (NCNNLM) is not well defined and even controversial because evidence of its effectiveness is lacking. Most studies that have been carried out have lacked a sufficient number of patients with each of the various primary malignancies, mainly because of the relative paucity of cases that involve an isolated resectable liver metastasis.…”

“…We have previously published two reports based on the database. The first report included comprehensive data obtained from all patients, and the second report summarized the utility of postoperative chemotherapy for patients undergoing upfront liver resection 11,12 . Modern chemotherapy using fluorouracil plus leucovorin with oxaliplatin and fluorouracil plus leucovorin with irinotecan were approved for clinical use in 2005 in Japan; therefore, we collected data from patients with newly diagnosed CRLM from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2007.…”
