“…Prior research has found that students with lower mathematical ability are less capable on graph interpretation tasks (Curcio, 1987;Gal, 1993), a finding corroborated by this study. However, these studies used multiple choice tests (e.g., Friel, Curcio, & Bright, 2001) and provided less detail about the specific mathematical methods participants used or failed to use.…”

“…Students' mathematics knowledge affects their ability to interpret graphs correctly. Students less capable and experienced with math generally had more difficulty with graph interpretations tasks (Curcio, 1987). Students less skilled at graphing also had more difficulty inferring trends with less familiar graphs (Shah & Hoeffner, 2002).…”

“…The framework for interpreting tables and graphs provides a progression from simple numerical reading of a table to more complex interpretations of tables and graphs required for a better understanding of data in their context. Another classification of patterns of reading and comprehending graphs, and hence of interpreting of graphs, was developed by Curcio (1987) who assessed fourth and seventh grade students' interpretations of school graphs. From the analysis of the students' responses, he developed a framework for assessing and building learners' graphical comprehension that has three levels: reading the data, reading within the data, and reading beyond the data.…”
