Composition of the Volatile Oil ofFerula stenocarpaBoiss. & Hausskn

Abstract: The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts ofFemlastenocarpa Boiss., a native plant of Iran, was examined by using GC and GC/MS. Twenty-six compounds constituting 97.8% of the total components detected were identified. a-Pinene (48.8%) and P-pinene (30.1%) were found to be the major components in the oil.

“…The essential oil composition of different plant parts of F. gummosa has already been investigated, and a-pinene or b-pinene was found as the major compound [21 -24]. The essential oil of F. stenocarpa analyzed by Rustaiyan et al [34] showed general similarity to the present oil, and both oils contained a-pinene and b-pinene as main components. The essentialoil composition of the two samples of F. galbaniflua (GA 1 and GA 2 ), collected from two different locations in Iran, was reported here for the first time.…”

“…In this chemotaxonomical investigation of the genus Ferula from Iran, the essential oil composition of 23 [33], and F. stenocarpa [34] have been previously reported. Although the compositions of the essential oils of several Ferula species have already been published, little is known about the significance of the essential oil components for chemotaxonomic purposes.…”

“…Studies with F. stenocarpa from Iran, indicated that the essential oils contained 48.8% α-pinene, associated with 30.1% β-pinene, as the major constituents. 8 In addition, the main component in the oils of F. galbaniflua 13 and F. gummosa 14 from Iran was β-pinene (58.8% and 46.4%, respectively). α-Pinene and β-pinene were also identified in our samples, but in lower percentages (<10%).…”

“…[5][6][7] Some reports on the composition of the essential oils of the Ferula species from Iran, viz. F. stenocarpa, 8 F. Flabelliloba, 9 F. asa-foetida, 10 F. persica, 11,12 F. galbaniflua, 13 and F. gummosa 14 have been published. In addition, the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of F. gummosa has been studied.…”
