Composition of ginger (Zingiber officinale roscoe) volatile oils from Nigeria

Abstract: The chemical composition of the ginger oils (obtained by hydrodistillation) of fresh and dried rhizomes of Nigerian origin were investigated by means of a combination of column chromatography, high resolution gas chromatography (GC) and GC-MS. The essential oils contained mainly mono-and sesqui-terpenoids of which geranial, neral, 1 ,&cineole, zingiberene, f3-bisabolene and f3-sesquiphellandrene were the major components. Among the 54 constituents identified, (E)(E)-a-farnesene, viridiflorol and (E)(E)-farnesa… Show more

“…The contents of b-bisabolene, geraniol, eugenol, borneol, b-selinene, torreyol, a-selinene, a-copane, a-thujene, c-terpene and terpinen-4-ol were stable in the two oils, though they were present in small amounts (<1%). The occurrence of geranial and neral in appreciable quantities (>3.7%) in the two oils could be responsible for the lemon aroma (Ekundayo et al 1988).…”

“…However it has been observed that the quality of its dried ginger has been declining, due to low level of mechanization of ginger production and processing (Onu and Okafor, 2003), with attendant mould growth and loss of some important ginger qualities, as a result of which Nigerian ginger attracts the cheapest price in the world market (Ekundayo et. al., 1988).…”

“…Ginger oils from Nigeria, 20 Fiji 21 and India 17Y19 have also been analysed, showing signi®cant dierences. These results suggest that the composition of ginger oils may be dependent on chemotaxonomic dierences between strains or on climatic and growing conditions.…”
