Composition and antioxidant activity of the essential oil of Teucrium royleanum Wall. ex Benth growing in Pakistan

Abstract: The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the leaves of Teucrium royleanum, growing in Pakistan, was investigated by GC-MS analyses. Kováts indices, mass spectra and standard compounds were used to identify a total of 46 individual compounds. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons formed the main portion (42.2%) of the oil, among which β β β β β -santalene and cis-α α α α α-bisabolene were the predominant compounds. The potential antioxidant activity was also investigated and the sample tested was found … Show more

“…Also, essential oils have been reported from the aerial parts of several Teucrium spp. The oils showed different yields in the various species, ranging between 0.5% and 1.5%, and the percentage of the major chemical constituents (mainly monoterpene/sesquiterpenes hydrocarbons and oxygenated sesquiterpenes) differs notably from species to species (Saroglou et al, 2007). Rhazya stricta Decne (Harmal), a member of Apocynaceae family, is an important medicinal species used in folkloric medicine to cure various diseases in South Asia and in the Middle East (Gilani et al, 2007).…”

“…More than 220 diterpenes have been described to date, many of which are particularly interesting because of their ecological role as antifeedants against different species of insects and of their role in the medicinal properties of the plants [6]. So far, essential oils have been also reported from the aerial parts of several Teucrium species [7][8][9][10].…”

“…From the nonpharmacologic perspective, Maccioni et al (2007) has noted the importance of Teucrium species as edible plants, as some of them are currently used in the preparation of flavored wines, herbal teas, bitters, and liqueurs; infusions of the leaves and flowers are used for flavoring beers in some areas. The importance of this genus in the food industries lies also in the fact that many species display anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, and anti-fungal activities, rendering them useful as natural preservative ingredients (Ulubelen et al, 2000;Özkan et al, 2007;Saroglou et al, 2007).…”
